Amongst the conflict, the celebrating and festive spirit of Ukrainian nativity traditions continued to brighten my days, and your photos, along with your radiant smile, inspire me even more to celebrate the season’s joy. The holiday cheer will carry on until the New Year with several events planned, however, yesterday stands out as truly special.
I spent the day with volunteers, walking through Odessa's streets and visiting crowded areas. Together, we brought Ukrainian Nativity traditions to life by organizing "Vertep" performances. These traditional scenes, steeped in history, involve puppet theaters or live re-enactments of the Nativity, often accompanied by joyful caroling. Our goal was to bring a sense of festive warmth to the city, even in these challenging times.
Although Vertep celebrations have become more subdued due to the current struggles in Ukraine, we are committed to preserving this beautiful cultural heritage. It’s a reminder of the resilience and spirit of the Ukrainian people. I captured some photos during the performances and can’t wait to share them with you.
One of the most heartwarming moments was in Nerubayske, near Odessa, where an underground Santa's grotto provided a magical escape for children. These experiences have strengthened my belief in the unity of our community, even as we face such adversity together.
